10 Journeys in Italian Architecture showcases the works of ten photographers, all under the age of 40, on more than 250 of the most famous, eccentric and hard-to-reach buildings

The peninsula and its heritage of modern constructions: what is the current situation? The report answers this 10 journeys in Italian architecturea collective exhibited in the largest court of prestige Altemps Palace, in the heart of the capital, one of the seats of the National Roman Museum. Between 2019 and 2020, ten photographers, all under 40, have chosen to travel the national territory in search of curiosity, details, innovations of the architectural panorama. He comes to collect a total of 3000 photographs, 108 of which were selected for the exhibition. Over 250 buildings photographed, from the most famous and the most eccentric and inaccessible.

Mapping Italy from north to south following its enigmatic and revealing profilemodern architecture: this is the idea of ​​10 journeys, an exhibition which by its very nature cannot but be itinerant. arrives in Rome after the first stop at the Palazzo dell’Arte, as part of the Milan Triennale. The setting, in the courtyard of the Roman Palace, immediately catches the eye: the entire space is occupied by a walkable platform that reproduces Italy on a scale of 1: 56,000. The reference photo panels are from the various areas explored.

Its quantity photographic documentation, which thickens the courtyard, can also be observed from another perspective. Palazzo Altemps’ noble floor balconies allow you to scrutinize the boot-shaped installation from above for a concise, overall look.

The selection helps to restore the homogeneity of the photos. However, among photographers, there are those who have more attention to detail, those who have a sharper cut, others softer. The edition we created is reminiscent of a travel guide, the photographers had the opportunity to express themselves more widely in the text, saying how architecture is lived and treated.“, explained Matteo Balduzzi, curator of the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MuFoCo) in Milan.

An exhibition that combines many lines, photography, buildings, travel, territory, but which above all reflects the growing Italian tendency to bring the modern to ancient places, for a close and fascinating dialogue. Architecture is a fickle muse, against which it is necessary to update and measure, preferably within the walls of an ancient palace that preserves its tradition.
