In this period, applied research in every industrial sector is mainly concerned with two topics: sustainability and artificial intelligence (AI). Regarding the latter, the interest includes the study of all electronic and computing advances towards a new Internet, towards the expansion and intensification of digitization, and finally towards the understanding of the metaverse and its utility.

The two issues face new clear examples and have become the guideline of every innovation or every simple change: First of all, we cannot think of following innovative paths, always necessary for survival and industrial development, if we do not consider sustainability and artificial intelligence. are linked in a synergistic effort.

The field of surface treatment is also heavily involved in this new scenario. In this industrial sector, sustainability cannot go beyond reasons of circularity – a treated surface is not recyclable – but must include every productive and commercial activity within the individual company and, perhaps precisely for this reason, it can be the most sensitive area in IT and electronic innovations.

However, one aspect to consider is that sustainability and IT innovation are not two goals to be pursued separately, but that to increase one, new sensor and electronic processing technologies must be applied.

It is a general fact that any new initiative involves many disciplines and this is even more so in the field of surface treatments, a sector with a long supply chain with highly interdependent steps. In fact, it includes the production of materials, the deep chemical-physical analysis of the surface, the application of materials with advanced engineering plant solutions.

Tremendous advances have been made in the field of surface characterization, with software able to process the data offered by contact surveys or spectrophotometric surveys to provide images. In the composition of paints, an important help now comes from the availability and processing of data derived from observations of the chemical-physical behavior of the numerous components used. The main problem is, always and in every case, how to maintain an adequate financial cost for the companies. In conclusion, the issues to be addressed are many and we believe that each company can testify to its commitment, its technical perspective in this important scientific field.
