Italian technology institute develops an artificial intelligence that features ‘social harmony’. An artificial intelligence capable of replicating human behavior in all its nuances and, above all, unpredictability. The project originates from a research carried out by Agnieszka Wykowska entitled “Social cognition in human-robot interaction“(Social cognition in human-robot interaction), which analyzes human-machine interaction to improve robot awareness of human emotions.
A real project called Example – Deliberate stance for social harmonizationwhich focuses precisely on the ability to understand and predict the behavior of others. This ability is innate in man. the goal is to transfer the skill to the robot as well.
AI that understands human behavior
Research and developments in the world of robotics have made great strides in recent times. The latest news tells us about robots that are aware of their bodies and artificial intelligences that seem to be aware of themselves. The Italian Institute of Technology is also conducting research in this area, and the latest is focused on creating an AI capable of understanding human behavior.
Human beings experience a vast amount of emotions and the nuances are endless. A robot, even “understanding” their meaning, is unable to predict them during a speech. In one example cited in the research, we’re talking about predicting a person’s actions based on what they’re doing at the time. When someone reaches for a glass of water, we instinctively understand that they are doing so because they are thirsty. We get it I will and it is need behind the action, which is to quench your thirst.
IIT is based on Attitude planning to develop its artificial intelligence. A term is one of the abstractions coined by the philosopher Daniel Dennett to indicate the behavior of an entity in terms of mental qualities. In his work the philosopher defines theto be who will perform the action; The I will of the people; of desires And need. Once these variables are defined, it is possible to predict the action that will take place.
The IIT survey
The work of the Italian Institute of Technology is based on the idea, always defined by Dennett, that the “system” that performs the action cannot have malfunctions and that its actions are intrinsically dependent on its physical and mental characteristics. It is a first step towards understanding it nature of actions and then their own reasons.
IIT has several labs to test and refine AI responses based on human behavior. The business center is located in Genoa and the activities are open to all on request. The research uses the iCub robot, also known in its flying version as the iRonCub. The robot is used by the institute for different purposes, modified starting from its basic version as needed. iCub is open source, both in terms of software and hardware.
But are people ready to have social interactions with robots? This is the question IIT researchers are asking. While AI is getting better at predicting human behavior, can the same be said for humans? On the other hand, as the researchers argue, a robot’s actions become meaningful only when we give them meaning. If a machine pointed its finger in a direction, could we perceive its will?
There social harmony it is not a one-way street: when AI can understand our desires, we should be ready to do so too. This is the central objective of Italian Institute of Technology research: working hand in hand with humans and robots to create mutual understanding and awareness.
